• The talisman of victory. In samurai culture, dried gourds were famously used by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi as his personal battle standard, eventually becoming known as the Sennari Hyotan (Thousand Gourds) — a supreme symbol of continuous victory and military fortune.
• Warding off evil. Because a gourd has a narrow neck and a wide base, it's traditionally believed to trap negative energy and bad luck inside it, acting as a protective shield for the martial artist during heavy combat.
